Essential Ingredients for Your Peanut Butter Spider Cookies

Crafting these delightful Halloween spider cookies requires simple, readily available ingredients. You likely have most of them in your pantry already! Here’s what you’ll need to gather:

All the ingredients laid out for making spider peanut butter cookies.

  • Unsalted Butter: Softened to room temperature, this forms the rich base of our cookies. Using unsalted butter allows you to control the overall saltiness of the cookies.
  • Granulated Sugar & Brown Sugar: A blend of both sugars gives the cookies the perfect balance of sweetness, chewiness, and depth of flavor. Brown sugar also adds moisture.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter: The star ingredient! Opt for a smooth, creamy peanut butter (like Jif or Skippy) for the best texture and consistent flavor in your cookies. Natural peanut butter can sometimes alter the texture due to oil separation.
  • Large Egg: Acts as a binder, holding all the ingredients together and adding richness.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances all the other flavors, adding a warm, aromatic note to the cookies.
  • All-Purpose Flour: The structural component of the cookies. Measure it correctly by spooning it into a measuring cup and leveling it off.
  • Baking Soda: Our leavening agent, which helps the cookies rise slightly and achieve that classic chewy texture with a soft center.
  • Salt: A crucial ingredient that balances the sweetness and brings out the robust peanut butter flavor.
  • Mini Reese’s Cups: The perfect “body” for our spiders! Make sure they are mini-sized and chilled before use.
  • Black Cookie Icing: For drawing the spider legs. You can find this in tubes with fine tips, making decoration a breeze.
  • Candy Eyes: These edible decorations instantly bring your spider cookies to life, adding to their fun and spooky charm.

Step-by-Step: How to Make Spider Peanut Butter Cookies

Creating these delightful peanut butter cup spider cookies is a fun and rewarding process. Follow these detailed steps to bake your own batch of Halloween magic!

Prepare the Dough

Begin by combining the unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl. It’s crucial for the butter to be at room temperature for optimal creaming.

Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugars together on medium speed for about 2-3 minutes. Continue mixing until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and well-creamed. This step incorporates air, making your cookies tender.

Next, add the creamy peanut butter to the creamed butter and sugar mixture. Mix again on medium speed until all ingredients are thoroughly combined and the mixture is smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure everything is incorporated.

Reduce the mixer speed to low. Add the large egg and vanilla extract, beating just until they are fully incorporated into the dough. Overmixing at this stage can lead to tough cookies.

Finally, gradually add the dry ingredients: all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix on low speed until the flour streaks have just disappeared and a cohesive dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.

Chill the Dough & Reese’s Cups

Shape the cookie dough into a disc, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and place it in the refrigerator to chill for at least one hour. Chilling the dough is crucial as it prevents the cookies from spreading too much during baking, resulting in a thicker, chewier cookie. At the same time, place your unwrapped mini Reese’s cups in the refrigerator to chill. This prevents them from melting when pressed into the warm cookies.

Bake the Cookies

After the cookie dough has chilled for one hour, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.

Roll the chilled dough into 1-inch balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheets, ensuring they are about two inches apart to allow for spreading.

Bake each sheet of cookies one at a time on the middle rack of your oven for 10-11 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are just set and begin to crack. The cookies may still look soft in the middle, but they will continue to set as they cool. While the cookies bake, keep the unwrapped Reese’s cups in the refrigerator to maintain their chill.

Add Reese’s & Cool

As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, gently press one chilled mini Reese’s cup into the center of each warm cookie. The warmth of the cookie will slightly melt the chocolate, helping it adhere. Immediately transfer the cookies to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. This step is crucial before decorating.

Decorate Your Spiders

Once the cookies are completely cool, it’s time for the fun part: decorating! Using black cookie icing (from a tube with a fine tip), pipe eight spider legs onto each cookie. Draw four lines extending outward from the Reese’s cup body and curving slightly down the cookie on each side. Aim for thin, delicate lines to mimic real spider legs.

Finally, dab two tiny spots of icing onto the Reese’s cup where you want the eyes to be. Gently attach two candy eyes to these spots, pressing lightly to secure them. Repeat for all cookies, and watch your adorable spider army come to life!

Tips for Perfect Spider Peanut Butter Cookies

To ensure your Halloween peanut butter cookies turn out absolutely perfect, keep these handy tips in mind:

  • Chill Those Reese’s Cups! This is perhaps the most crucial tip. If you use room-temperature Reese’s cups on warm cookies, they will melt into a chocolatey puddle. Chilling them ensures they hold their shape perfectly when pressed into the soft cookie. If you forget to chill them for an hour in the fridge, pop them into the freezer for 10-15 minutes for a quick chill.
  • Don’t Skip Chilling the Dough: Chilling the cookie dough helps prevent excessive spreading, resulting in thicker, chewier cookies. It also deepens the flavor.
  • Achieving Perfectly Round Cookies: After inserting the Reese’s cup, if your cookie looks a little misshapen, you can gently swirl a round cookie cutter (slightly larger than your cookie) around the warm cookie on the baking sheet. This helps to reshape and lift it, creating a perfectly round, domed cookie.
  • Do Not Overbake: Peanut butter cookies are best when slightly soft in the center. Bake until the edges are just set and lightly golden, and the center is still a bit soft. They will continue to cook slightly as they cool on the baking sheet.
  • Cool Completely Before Decorating: Patience is key! If you try to pipe the icing onto warm cookies, it will melt and smudge. Ensure your cookies are entirely cooled to room temperature before adding the spider legs and eyes.
  • Quality Ingredients Matter: Use good quality creamy peanut butter and fresh butter and eggs for the best flavor and texture.
  • Decorating Hack: If you don’t have candy eyes, you can use two small dots of white icing (or melted white chocolate) and then a tiny dot of black icing in the center of each for DIY eyes.

Common Questions About Spider Peanut Butter Cookies

Can I use crunchy peanut butter?

While creamy peanut butter is recommended for a smooth cookie texture, you can experiment with crunchy peanut butter. Be aware that it will change the texture of the cookies, adding a noticeable crunch.

Can I make these cookies ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the cookie dough and chill it for up to 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Alternatively, you can bake the cookies (without adding Reese’s or decorating), freeze them, and then add the Reese’s and decorations once thawed. The fully decorated cookies can also be stored as described below.

What if I don’t have black cookie icing?

You can make your own black icing using powdered sugar, a little milk or water, and black food coloring gel. Alternatively, melted dark chocolate in a piping bag with a very fine tip can also work for the legs.

Can I use different candies instead of Reese’s cups?

Yes, you can! While mini Reese’s cups are classic for this design, you could try other small, round candies that fit the center of the cookie. Just ensure they are chilled to prevent melting.

Storing Your Spider Peanut Butter Cookies

Once fully cooled and decorated, these delicious spider cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days. For longer storage, you can freeze the undecorated baked cookies for up to 3 months. To thaw, simply place them on a plate at room temperature for a few hours before decorating. If storing decorated cookies in the freezer, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze solid, then transfer to an airtight container separated by parchment paper to prevent the decorations from sticking or getting smudged.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ¾ cups + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 25 mini Reese’s cups
  • Black cookie icing
  • 25 pairs of candy eyes

Instructions

  1. Add the butter and sugars to a large mixing bowl. Use an electric mixer to beat them together, on medium speed for about 2-3 minutes. Once creamed, add in the peanut butter and mix again on medium speed until combined.
  2. Then, add the egg and vanilla extract and beat on a low speed until combined.
  3. Add in the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix again on a low speed.
  4. Shape the cookie dough into a disc and wrap it in plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator for one hour to chill. Place the mini Reese’s cups in the refrigerator to also chill.
  5. After the cookie dough has been chilling for one hour, preheat the oven to 350℉ (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Create 1-inch balls of dough and place them on the baking sheet about two inches apart. Bake each sheet of cookies one at a time on the middle rack for 10-11 minutes, just until the cookies begin to crack. While the cookies bake, unwrap Reese’s cups and then keep them in the refrigerator until use.
  7. As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, gently press a chilled Reese’s cup into the center of each cookie. Then, move the cookies to a cooling rack.
  8. Once the cookies are cool, pipe on the spider’s legs. Create eight legs by drawing four lines from the Reese’s cup outward and down the cookie on each side. Dab two spots of icing to glue the eyes to the body of the Reese’s cups.

Notes

To get a round, domed cookie, swirl the cookie inside a round cookie cutter or large glass to shape it after inserting Reese’s cup. The Reese’s cup can cause the cookie to crack further or break, which will help reshape and lift it.

Don’t skip on chilling the Reese’s cups! If you add room temperature Reese’s onto a warm cookie, they will melt.

If you forget to chill the Reese’s cups for an hour in the fridge, pop them in the freezer for 10 minutes. Either way, just ensure they’re chilled and not room temperature!

Ensure the cookies are fully cooled down before decorating them with the icing.
