Beyond The Oven: A Glimpse Into My World and Blogging Journey
Hello wonderful readers! For quite some time, I’ve harbored the idea of expanding the scope of this blog beyond just delicious recipes. Today, I’m thrilled to announce the official launch of a new series designed to do just that: Welcome to Beyond The Oven! My hope for this series is to share a more personal side of my life—what happens when the cameras are off and the baking is done. We’ll explore some of my favorite things that aren’t kitchen-related, and most importantly, I aim to connect with all of you on a deeper level, moving beyond our shared love for decadent desserts to discover what truly makes us tick.
To kick things off and offer a little insight into who I am, I’m taking the opportunity to answer a few personal questions today. Over the past few months, I’ve been incredibly honored to receive nominations for several blogging awards from my fantastic fellow bloggers. A heartfelt thank you to Mary Frances, D, and Michelle for these wonderful recognitions. While I’ve been a bit (okay, very!) lazy in fulfilling the award requirements—one of which involves answering a series of questions posed by the nominators—I’m finally remedying that today. This is the perfect moment to dive into some personal reflections and share more about the person behind the recipes.
Getting to Know Me: Answering Your Burning Questions
Mary Frances’ Questions:
- What is your #1 indulgence?
Initially, my mind immediately jumps to shoes! There’s something undeniably captivating about a beautifully crafted pair of shoes that just speaks to my soul. But, if we’re specifically talking about food, which I suspect we are on a baking blog, then my ultimate culinary indulgence would have to be a dozen spicy buffalo fried chicken wings. The perfect blend of crispy skin, tender meat, and that fiery, tangy sauce is simply irresistible. It’s the kind of treat I crave after a long week and truly savor every single bite.
2. What makes you happiest?
It might sound cliché, but spending quality time with my family and friends genuinely makes me the happiest. There’s a unique warmth and comfort that comes from being surrounded by the people you love, sharing laughs, stories, and creating new memories. Whether it’s a quiet evening at home, a lively dinner party, or an adventure outdoors, these moments of connection are truly invaluable and the foundation of my joy.
3. What is the most important thing in a person?
For me, trustworthiness stands out as the single most important quality in a person. It’s the bedrock of any meaningful relationship, be it with family, friends, or colleagues. Knowing that you can rely on someone’s honesty, integrity, and discretion fosters a sense of security and genuine connection. A trustworthy person is someone you can confide in, depend on, and build lasting bonds with, making them an indispensable presence in life.
4. Are you a morning or night person?
Oh, without a doubt, I am 100% a night person! My husband has learned over the years that it’s best not to engage with me before my morning tea has fully kicked in, and pretty much everyone in my life knows not to schedule anything with me before noon. I find my most productive and creative hours emerge as the day winds down. Whether it’s studying, reading, baking new recipes, or diving into blog posts, my best work happens late into the evening. I’m often lucky if I make it to bed by midnight on any given day. I realize this habit might need to shift eventually, especially with rumors of children turning you into an “all-day” person, but for now, the quiet of the night is my sanctuary.
PS: Speaking of my nocturnal habits, look what my hubby posted on my Facebook wall last week – it perfectly captures my essence!

Yup, that pretty much sums me up perfectly.
5. What is your biggest pet peeve?
My biggest pet peeve is when people condescendingly assume that English isn’t my first language. I frequently hear comments like, “Oh, you speak such good English!” and honestly, it drives me absolutely nuts. This common misconception often carries an underlying assumption that can be quite frustrating. Just for the record, I learned English at age: birth! It’s simply part of my identity, and these remarks, while sometimes well-intentioned, often come across as patronizing and highlight a lack of awareness.
6. What are your childhood memories associated with Christmas baking?
Growing up, my family, being Muslim, didn’t celebrate Christmas in our home. However, living in a country where half the population did, and attending an Anglican school, meant I had ample opportunities to experience most of the religious traditions and festivities. While there was no Santa Claus for me, I distinctly remember the vibrant decorations, the festive songs, and the general atmosphere of joy and togetherness that permeated the season. Observing friends and classmates partake in their family traditions, including the aroma of festive baking wafting from other homes, created a unique perspective on the holiday spirit.
7. Describe your fashion sense in one word.
If I had to pick one word, it would be “Michelle Obama.” This woman embodies everything I aspire to in terms of style. Her fashion choices are consistently classy, thoughtfully colorful, and often incorporate a playful element. She exudes confidence and elegance without being overly ostentatious, striking a perfect balance between sophistication and approachability. Her style truly resonates with my own aesthetic preferences.
8. What would be your perfect afternoon?
My perfect afternoon would involve a leisurely walk through Madison Avenue in New York City, allowing myself to daydream about all the stunning clothes I can’t quite afford yet. This would be followed by a delightful stop at a charming bakery for some delicious treats, paired with a comforting cup of tea. And, of course, the experience wouldn’t be complete without the company of my dearest girlfriends, sharing laughter and conversation, making the entire afternoon truly special and unforgettable.
9. What is a habit you want to get rid of?
The habit I’m most eager to get rid of is staying up so late. While being a night owl has its benefits for my creative work, it often leads to a constant feeling of being rushed and can impact my overall well-being. I’m actively working on trying to be more efficient in managing my full-time school commitments, consistent blogging, and most importantly, ensuring I’m not inadvertently neglecting quality time with my husband in the evenings. Achieving a better work-life balance is a key goal for me.
10. What is a hobby you’d like to try?
I actually started learning how to knit back in high school, but unfortunately, I fell off the wagon and never really picked it up again. I would absolutely love to try it once more. There’s something incredibly appealing about the meditative process of knitting, creating something tangible and cozy with your own hands. It seems like a wonderful, calming activity that could offer a perfect creative outlet away from the digital world of blogging and baking.
11. What is a trend you would start?
Without a moment’s hesitation, the trend I would enthusiastically start is mandatory siestas in the middle of the workday! Yes, please! I truly believe that a short, restorative nap or period of rest could significantly boost productivity, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. Imagine how much more focused and energized everyone would be in the afternoon if they had a chance to recharge. It might sound a bit lazy, but I envision a world where everyone embraces a midday pause for optimal performance and happiness.
Michelle’s Questions:
- What makes you happiest in life?
As mentioned earlier, the core of my happiness truly stems from the precious moments I share with my family and friends. It’s in those genuine connections, shared laughter, and unwavering support that I find profound joy and contentment. Beyond specific activities, it’s the feeling of belonging and mutual understanding within these relationships that enriches my life most deeply.
2. What is your favorite app and why?
Oh my gosh, Instagram is hands down my favorite app, and I’m completely obsessed! I admit I’m a major “stalker” – not in a creepy way, of course, but I love scrolling through endless feeds of beautiful imagery, discovering new creators, following inspiring food photographers, and staying connected with friends and fellow bloggers. It’s an incredible platform for visual storytelling, creative inspiration, and a quick escape into a world of curated beauty, making it an indispensable part of my daily routine.
3. Your biggest and craziest dream for yourself/your life?
My biggest and perhaps craziest dream for my life is to live in Paris. The allure of the city of lights, with its rich history, unparalleled art, exquisite food, and timeless fashion, has always captivated my imagination. I dream of waking up to the smell of fresh croissants, spending afternoons wandering through charming cobblestone streets, practicing my French, and immersing myself completely in its vibrant culture. It represents an ultimate blend of passion for food, beauty, and life itself.
4. Your favorite magazine?
It’s truly a tie between two distinct publications that cater to different facets of my interests: Saveur and Vogue. Saveur speaks to my culinary soul with its in-depth exploration of global food, cultural traditions, and stunning photography that goes beyond mere recipes. On the other hand, Vogue is my go-to for all things fashion, art, and culture, offering a window into the latest trends and timeless elegance. Both magazines provide a rich source of inspiration and enjoyment.
5. What was your bravest moment?
I would have to say that my bravest moment was leaving my home country of Sierra Leone at the age of 18 to pursue my studies in Singapore. The decision came with the profound realization that I would likely never return there to live permanently, yet I knew that embarking on this journey would open up a world of opportunities and personal growth. It required immense courage to step out of my comfort zone, embrace the unknown, and build a new life far away from everything familiar, but it was an experience that profoundly shaped who I am today.
6. Your favorite beauty item?
Yikes, I’m quite bad at this question, as I don’t really use beauty products on a regular basis. I probably wear makeup only twice a month, if I’m lucky, and I know I probably should more often! But I guess my face wash definitely counts as a beauty item. It’s an oil-reducing formula that works wonders for my skin, keeping it feeling fresh and clean. It’s a simple, essential part of my minimal beauty routine that I truly rely on.
7. Shy/Outgoing/Sarcastic?
I’d describe myself as a blend of all three. Initially, I tend to be quite shy and reserved, observing and taking things in before fully engaging. However, once I get to know you, I become very outgoing—sometimes even a bit too much! And as for sarcasm, it’s pretty much a constant companion; it’s a natural part of my sense of humor and how I often express myself. So, you get the full spectrum, depending on our level of familiarity!
8. What do you like most about blogging?
Hands down, what I love most about blogging is the incredible community it fosters. There’s a genuine joy in meeting new bloggers, discovering their unique voices and creative endeavors, and getting to know them on a personal and professional level. The support, shared experiences, and collaborative spirit within the blogging world are truly inspiring and have enriched my own journey immensely. It’s a space where connections flourish and creativity thrives.
9. What is your favorite blog (other than your own!)?
Oh, this is an impossible question! I honestly cannot pick just one favorite blog. The digital world is so vast and constantly evolving that I find myself discovering new, captivating blogs almost every week, and I fall in love with them all over again. Each blog offers a unique perspective, beautiful content, and fresh inspiration, making it truly impossible to single out just one. My favorites are constantly shifting and expanding.
10. Favorite Place to Shop?
For everyday style and accessible trends, H&M is a go-to for me. When I’m traveling and feel like splurging a little, Zara is an absolute must-visit for its chic and contemporary pieces. Now, if we’re talking about my ideal, dream places to shop without any budget constraints? That list would be absolutely endless, filled with high-fashion boutiques and unique independent designers from around the world.
D’s Questions:
1. Which country would you go to if you were given a free airplane ticket?
Without a shadow of a doubt, I would choose Italy. The thought of exploring its ancient ruins, marveling at Renaissance art, savoring authentic pasta and gelato, and soaking in the picturesque landscapes from the Amalfi Coast to the Tuscan hills is incredibly appealing. Italy offers a rich tapestry of culture, history, and culinary delights that I am eager to experience firsthand, making it my top dream destination for an unforgettable adventure.
2. What is the best advice your parents gave you?
My Dad once shared a piece of wisdom with me that has stuck with me through the years: “Even the things you love to do will be hard to do one day.” This advice serves as a profound reminder that passion alone isn’t always enough to overcome challenges; perseverance and dedication are equally crucial. It teaches me to appreciate the journey, anticipate difficulties, and remain resilient even when pursuing things I deeply enjoy, including blogging and baking.
3. What are your plans for summer?
Whoops, this question is either coming in a bit late or super early, depending on your perspective! To be completely honest, I have absolutely no concrete plans for the upcoming 2014 summer, and I’m quite intentionally keeping it that way. After a period of intense focus on school and the blog, I’m looking forward to a summer filled with spontaneity, relaxation, and perhaps some unplanned adventures. Sometimes, the best plans are no plans at all.
4. Tea or coffee?
Oh, definitely tea! I am a devoted tea lover, consuming a minimum of two cups every single day, often more. There’s something incredibly comforting and ritualistic about brewing a perfect cup of tea, whether it’s black, green, or herbal. It’s my go-to beverage for starting the day, unwinding in the afternoon, or cozying up in the evening. In fact, the quickest way to my heart is a thoughtful box of good quality tea – consider that a hint! 😉
5. What is the first thing you notice about someone when you meet them?
That’s an interesting question that I honestly haven’t deeply considered before. Typically, I find myself so focused on actively listening to what they are saying and engaging in the conversation that I don’t consciously pinpoint a “first thing.” However, I am about to meet someone very special for the first time tomorrow, so I’ll make a mental note to observe what immediately catches my attention and will report back on my findings!
6. Who would you invite to play if you could host a music night?
If it were just for my personal enjoyment, I would absolutely invite Michael Bublé to serenade us with his smooth, classic tunes. His voice is simply enchanting. However, if my husband were present, the choice would instantly shift to Taylor Swift. He’s a huge fan, and seeing his excitement and enjoyment would make the evening just as special for me. It would be a joy to share that experience with him.
7. What did you learn from blogging?
I’ve learned a tremendous amount from my blogging journey, but perhaps the most profound lesson has been the futility of comparing myself to anyone else. In a saturated online world with millions of blogs, it’s often hard to define what truly makes my space unique. Yet, I constantly strive to focus on being authentically myself. It sounds like the simplest thing, but I’ve found it to be one of the hardest aspects of maintaining a creative and personal online presence. Embracing my own voice and style has been key to finding genuine fulfillment.
8. How would you describe yourself on your profile on a dating website?
Given the context of this playful question, I would likely start with the most obvious and lighthearted description: “Single (duh!).” Beyond that, I’d aim for a profile that reflects my genuine personality—someone who is passionate about baking and lifestyle, loves to connect with people, enjoys travel and quiet evenings alike, and values honesty and humor. It would be a balance of my creative pursuits and my personal values, all wrapped up with a touch of wit.
9. What kind of friend are you?
Based on feedback from my friends, I’ve been described as brutally honest, occasionally a “dream crusher” (but always with good intentions and a dose of reality), and fiercely supportive. From my own perspective, I strive to always be loyal, a steadfast presence in their lives, and genuinely there for my friends through thick and thin. I believe in offering honest advice, even when it’s tough, and celebrating their successes while also providing comfort during challenges.
10. If you could change something in this world, what would it be?
Hmm… while world peace is an admirable goal, it feels like a monumental task not likely to happen soon. But if I had a magic wand to solve just one thing, it would be to prevent babies and children from suffering from terminal diseases. The thought of a child enduring such pain absolutely breaks my heart. This deep concern is precisely why I actively work with my local Make-A-Wish Chapter to help grant wishes for kids battling life-threatening illnesses. It’s a cause very close to my heart, and I encourage everyone to look up their local chapters and explore ways you can help make a difference in these brave children’s lives!
11. What do you like best about yourself?
What I like best about myself is probably my unwavering strength to persevere through hard times. Life inevitably throws challenges our way, and I’ve found that my ability to push through difficulties, maintain resilience, and keep moving forward, even when things feel overwhelming, is one of my most defining and valuable traits. It’s a quality that has served me well in every aspect of my life, from personal growth to my blogging journey.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read through this incredibly long post! It was truly fun and insightful to sit down and answer all these thoughtful questions, offering a deeper look into my personal world beyond the delicious recipes. I hope you enjoyed getting to know me a little better.
