Our Little Loaf at Four Months Life Beyond the Oven

Elliott’s Four-Month Adventure: Milestones, Routines, and Our First Christmas Journey

Time truly flies when you’re witnessing the incredible journey of new life! It feels like just yesterday we were bringing our little bundle of joy, Elliott, home. And just like that, he’s already four months old. It’s astonishing how quickly these precious weeks turn into months, and I often find myself wondering where my tiny newborn went. He’s growing at an incredible pace, unfolding new wonders every single day. Since it’s been a little while since our last update, I thought it was high time we caught up on all the exciting developments in Elliott’s world.

Our Happy 18-Week-Old: Growing by Leaps and Bounds

Elliott is a vibrant and cheerful 18-week-old boy, full of smiles and endless curiosity. We had his four-month physical earlier this week, and the numbers truly reflect his amazing growth. He weighed in at a healthy 15lbs 6oz and measured a whopping 25.5 inches! It’s incredible to see him transforming from a tiny infant into a more robust and responsive baby. Each weigh-in and measurement reminds us just how much he’s thriving, and as parents, there’s no greater joy than seeing your child healthy and happy.

Navigating the Daycare and Work-Life Balance

One of the most significant transitions for our family recently has been settling into a routine that incorporates daycare and our work schedules. It’s undeniably been the hardest adjustment we’ve faced so far, primarily for us as parents. Elliott, on the other hand, seems to be a remarkably happy camper with his wonderful babysitter and her adorable little girls. He lights up when he sees them, which brings immense relief, knowing he’s in loving hands and enjoying his days.

The challenge, however, lies in the limited time we get to spend with him during the weekdays. Returning to work brought about a substantial shift in our daily lives. The pang of guilt for missing so much of his waking hours, only being able to truly engage with him in the mornings and evenings, is a feeling many working parents can relate to. It’s a constant juggle, trying to maximize every precious second when he’s home. We especially cherish our weekends, dedicating them entirely to family time, making every moment count.

To all the working moms out there, how do you do it? Your resilience and dedication are truly inspiring. This past few weeks have certainly pushed me to become even more efficient and effective in my professional life. The motivation is simple: I don’t want to miss a single minute more than necessary with my son. It’s a powerful driver that fuels productivity, turning every work hour into a sprint so I can race back to his side.

Elliott’s Emerging Personality and Milestones

Elliott is truly blossoming, showing more of his unique personality every day. He’s now ‘talking’ a lot, engaging in delightful babbling conversations with anyone who’s willing to listen. His vocalizations are becoming more varied, filled with coos, gurgles, and increasingly distinct sounds that are incredibly fun to decipher. He’s always trying to connect, making eye contact, and offering big, gummy smiles that melt our hearts instantly.

Key Developmental Leaps at Four Months:

  • Oral Exploration: His primary skill currently involves exploring the world with his mouth. Anything he can get his hands on (or even his feet!) immediately goes in for a taste test. This is a crucial part of sensory development, helping him understand textures and shapes.
  • Fine Motor Skills: He’s getting remarkably good at grabbing and pulling. My braids have become a favorite target – much to my hair’s dismay! He also tries to eat them, adding a comical element to our interactions.
  • The Best Sound Ever: Elliott’s infectious, hysterical laughter is truly the most wonderful sound in the world. It’s pure, unadulterated joy, and it’s impossible not to laugh along with him. These moments are treasures we’ll replay in our minds for years to come.
  • Body Awareness: He’s discovered his feet and spends a good portion of his day grabbing them and attempting to pull them to his mouth. This newfound body awareness is a significant step in his motor development.
  • Rolling Attempts: He is trying so hard to roll over, putting in serious effort and often getting halfway there before needing a little nudge. We’re on constant lookout for that first independent roll, which is sure to be met with exuberant cheers!
  • Teething Anticipation: While we don’t have any teeth yet, the excessive drooling suggests we’re not far from that milestone. We’re stocking up on teething toys and preparing for the discomfort that often accompanies those first pearly whites.

A Glimpse into Our Routine: Eating and Sleeping Patterns

Establishing a routine has been a game-changer, providing much-needed predictability for both Elliott and us. He’s now fairly regular with his eating and sleeping schedule, which makes planning our days a little easier.

Feeding Schedule and Pumping Challenges:

Elliott currently goes through 8-10 feedings a day, maintaining his robust appetite. He’s still exclusively on breastmilk, a commitment I’m trying to maintain for as long as possible. However, the round-the-clock pumping, especially at work, is undeniably challenging. It carves out significant chunks of time from my already packed schedule, and it can be physically and emotionally draining. Many working mothers face this unique hurdle, balancing the desire to provide breastmilk with the demands of their careers.

We’ve recently discussed starting him on solids, and with clearance from his doctor at his four-month physical this week, we’re planning to introduce them next month. I’m incredibly excited about this new adventure! Our approach will likely involve starting with purees, carefully introducing new flavors and textures. The goal is to transition to more self-feeding and finger foods around six months, once his pincer grasp and chewing skills are more developed. I’ve already bookmarked some fantastic suggestions from Christina and am eager to get into the kitchen to make his first foods. To all the experienced parents out there: what did you start your babies with? Any tried-and-true favorites or tips you’d love to share?

Sleep Patterns and Nighttime Routine:

Elliott also takes 1-2 good naps during the day, allowing him to be more awake, alert, and engaged for playtime. This increased wakefulness is fantastic for interaction, though it does mean a little less time for housework on my part – a small price to pay for those precious bonding moments!

Our nighttime routine is fairly consistent. He goes down by 9 pm after a calming bath, which signals the winding down of the day. He typically wakes up only once, around 2-3 am, for a quick, efficient feeding, and then sleeps soundly until 7 am. It’s his cheerful morning ‘talking’ that serves as our alarm clock, waking us up every day between 7:00 and 7:15 am. There’s no better way to start the day than with a happy baby’s joyful sounds.

Our First Christmas: Making Magical Memories

This holiday season holds an extra layer of magic for us, as it marks Elliott’s very first Christmas! We’re absolutely thrilled to experience these traditions through his fresh eyes. This weekend, we’re embarking on the quintessential holiday adventure: visiting Santa Claus. I can hardly wait to see his reaction, though given how little he is, he’ll probably be more curious than amazed – but the memory will be priceless regardless.

We also recently took some delightful pictures for our holiday cards, which we’ve already sent out this week.
