32 Weeks Pregnant: Embracing the Final Stretch of My Third Trimester Journey
The journey of pregnancy truly does fly by, often in a beautiful, overwhelming blur. Despite my best intentions to post regular maternity updates, life, as it often does, had other plans. As the weeks advance and the third trimester deepens, energy levels tend to dwindle, making consistent blogging a challenge. But here we are, at a significant milestone with only eight weeks left until our little one is expected to arrive – a fact I still find astonishing! It’s time for a comprehensive update on how things are progressing as we round the corner towards meeting our baby boy.
The third trimester is a period of intense growth for the baby and significant changes for the expectant mother. It’s a time of both excitement and increasing physical demands, as the body works tirelessly to nurture life. From the first kicks to the final preparations for the nursery, every moment brings us closer to the big day. This update will delve into all the details, from physical symptoms and emotional well-being to baby’s development and our ongoing preparations.
My Third Trimester Milestones at 32 Weeks
Reaching 32 weeks marks a pivotal moment in pregnancy, signifying that we are truly in the homestretch. This stage is filled with anticipation as we witness the final rapid developments of our baby and prepare our lives for his arrival.
How Far Along: 32 Weeks
Thirty-two weeks into this incredible journey, and it feels like a marathon nearing its finish line. This week is often characterized by the baby putting on significant weight and continuing to develop crucial organ systems. For me, it means a growing belly and an ever-present reminder of the life flourishing within.
Due Date: August 2nd (Officially), July 29th (Unofficially)
Our official due date is August 2nd, a date etched into our minds. However, as is common with many pregnancies, there’s always an unofficial date floating around, in our case, July 29th. These dates serve as helpful markers, though we know that babies arrive on their own schedule. The excitement builds with every passing day, wondering when our little one will decide to make his grand entrance.
Baby’s Size: A Coconut (Approximately 4 lbs 12 oz)
This week, our baby is roughly the size of a coconut, weighing in at about 4 pounds and 12 ounces. It’s truly amazing to think about the progress from a tiny cell to a nearly five-pound human. At 32 weeks, babies typically continue to gain weight rapidly, often about half a pound per week. Their lungs are maturing, and their brains are undergoing incredible development, preparing for life outside the womb. This substantial growth is a wonderful reassurance that he is thriving.
Gender: A Boy, Confirmed!
It’s a boy, for sure! The latest ultrasound confirmed what we already knew and hoped for. The ultrasound technician pointed out his descended testicles this week, leaving no room for doubt. Knowing the gender has made the preparation even more real and personal, allowing us to envision him more clearly and select all the charming baby boy essentials.
Mom’s Journey: Navigating the Physical and Emotional Landscape
The third trimester brings its own unique set of physical and emotional challenges and joys. My body continues to adapt, and my mind races with the impending arrival.
Total Weight Gain: Around 18 Pounds
To date, I’ve gained approximately 18 pounds. This is well within the healthy range for pregnancy and reflective of both baby’s growth and my body’s changes. It’s a testament to the nourishing environment my body is creating, and I try to remind myself that every pound serves a purpose in supporting our little one’s development.
Maternity Clothes: An Absolute Essential
Maternity clothes have become my daily uniform, especially for work. Comfort is paramount at this stage, and specialized maternity wear offers the flexibility and support needed for a growing bump. At home, I still find comfort in non-maternity yoga pants and sweats, proving that some pre-pregnancy staples can still serve their purpose, at least for lounging.
Stretch Marks: Vigilance with Palmer’s Cocoa Butter
Thankfully, I haven’t noticed many stretch marks yet, and I’m diligently slathering on Palmer’s Cocoa Butter every morning. This ritual has become a vital part of my daily routine, aimed at keeping my skin hydrated and supple. While genetics play a big role, I believe in doing everything I can to support my skin through this incredible transformation.
Common Third Trimester Symptoms
The third trimester introduces a new array of symptoms, reminding me that the body is working overtime in these final weeks.
- Swelling (Edema): Last week, I noticed my feet started swelling after prolonged periods of standing, particularly after my weekend baking sessions. This is a bit of a bummer, as I love spending hours in the kitchen creating blog recipes, client orders, and family treats. It’s a clear signal that it’s time to slow down, elevate my feet more often, and ensure I stay well-hydrated to help manage the fluid retention.
- Heartburn: Heartburn has made an unwelcome return, much like it did in the first trimester, but this time it seems almost everything triggers it – from spicy dishes to even non-fried foods. This common pregnancy symptom is often caused by the growing uterus pressing on the stomach and the relaxing effect of pregnancy hormones on the esophageal sphincter. Smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding trigger foods are becoming my go-to strategies.
- Braxton Hicks Contractions: I’ve also started experiencing Braxton Hicks contractions. These “practice contractions” are a good sign that my body is preparing for labor, even if they aren’t the real thing. While sometimes uncomfortable, they are a reassuring indication that we are heading in the right direction.
Sleep: A Welcome Respite
After periods of restless nights, I am finally getting lots of sleep, and I’m almost afraid to jinx it by saying it out loud! Finding comfortable positions with a growing belly can be challenging, but I’ve found my rhythm. Adequate rest is crucial in these final weeks, helping both my body and mind prepare for what’s to come.
Exercise: Gentle Walks Are Key
My exercise routine has, sadly, become almost non-existent beyond long walks around our new neighborhood. These walks, however, prove to be incredibly helpful for both physical and mental well-being. I wish I could do more, but after a long day at work, my energy levels are significantly depleted. Listening to my body and prioritizing rest over strenuous activity is essential right now.
Baby’s Movement: A Constant Delight
Our little one is a whirlwind of activity, with crazy tumbling and kicking constantly happening inside. The movements are now so strong they are visible from the outside, which is truly magical. My husband, Mr. J, has even started playing a game of “chase the light” with him, shining a flashlight on my belly and watching the baby kick or follow the light. It’s incredibly cute to see his amusement and connection with the baby, even though only one of us is currently enjoying being kicked from the inside!
Best Moment This Week: The 8-Month Check-up and Ultrasound
The highlight of this week was definitely our 8-month check-up, which included another ultrasound. It was wonderful to see our little guy kicking and moving around with such vigor. Watching him on the screen, seeing his healthy growth and development, is always incredibly reassuring and fills us with so much joy.
Cravings, Moods, and Preparations
The emotional rollercoaster of pregnancy continues, accompanied by unique cravings and a growing sense of anticipation and urgency.
Missing Anything? Wine, Please!
Oh, how I miss wine! Just one glass, please! I went to the Taste of Syracuse yesterday, and all I really wanted was a refreshing wine slushy. While I know it’s a temporary sacrifice for the best reason, the thought of a nice glass of wine occasionally crosses my mind.
Food Cravings: Carbs Over Sweets
I’ve been somewhat “bad” in the cravings department lately because I haven’t had any specific, overwhelming cravings. Instead, I find myself gravitating towards lots of carbs, especially bread, and surprisingly, not so much for sweets these days. It’s a shift from earlier in the pregnancy, perhaps reflecting my body’s energy needs.
Queasy or Sick: Heartburn is the Main Culprit
I haven’t felt particularly queasy or sick, but the pervasive heartburn tends to make eating anything feel a bit challenging. It’s not nausea, but the discomfort after meals can be quite significant.
Mood: Anxious and Driven
My mood has definitely shifted towards anxiousness. There’s so much to finish before he gets here – experiments to wrap up in the lab, blog recipes for clients, and, of course, completing our baby shopping list. I have a strong feeling he might arrive a little early, which fuels my desire to work fast and get everything done. Packing my hospital bag has moved right to the top of my priority list!
Wedding Rings: Still On and Secure
My wedding rings are still comfortably on, with plenty of wiggle room. I don’t anticipate them needing to come off, which is a small relief amidst all the other physical changes.
Nursery: Nearing Completion
The nursery is almost done! We’re just waiting for the glider to arrive, which will be the final piece of furniture. A few little decor items like curtains, a lamp, some books, and wall art still need to be acquired, but the space is coming together beautifully. Creating this special haven for our baby has been one of the most heartwarming parts of the preparation process.
Looking Forward To: Baby Showers and Meeting Our Son
I am absolutely looking forward to my upcoming baby showers! One is next weekend with the family, and the week after, I’ll have another one at work. These celebrations are such a wonderful way to gather with loved ones, share the excitement, and receive their blessings and support. More than anything, I’m looking forward to holding our baby boy in my arms and beginning this incredible new chapter as a family.
