Unlocking the Magic: My First Walt Disney World Adventure as a 30-Something Skeptic
It’s been quite some time since my last “Beyond the Oven” post, and I felt it was high time to share an update on life beyond the recipes and the comforting confines of my kitchen. Truth be told, winters and I have never been the best of friends. I tend to view them as a season for hibernation, a time best spent curled up with warm comfort food. Consequently, my world for the past few months revolved predominantly around my kitchen and couch. That was until three weekends ago when a much-needed escape from the chill led me to the sunny warmth of Orlando, Florida, and an unexpected adventure at the Walt Disney World Resort – truly the perfect place to defrost!

Dole Whip!!! A must-try Disney treat!
From Disney Doubter to Enthusiast: My Unlikely Journey
Let me preface this by saying I’ve never considered myself a “fairytale kind of girl.” Growing up in Sierra Leone, Disney movies weren’t a staple of my childhood. While I’ve certainly read some classic stories and caught a few animated features since moving to the US, I largely missed out on that formative period of internalizing tales of Prince Charming and “happily ever afters” – and honestly, I wasn’t complaining! Consequently, the allure of Disney World had simply never registered for me. However, the same could not be said for my husband. A quintessential American kid, Disney World held a high rank on his wish list, fueled perhaps by a lingering childhood “grudge” from when his grandparents took his sisters but not him, a million years ago, as he likes to recall.
So, when he learned there was a blog conference I could attend at Disney World, his enthusiasm was immediate and infectious. The Food Blog Forum, a premier event for food bloggers, was indeed held at Disney World three weekends ago. I was incredibly fortunate to attend, not just with my husband, but also my sister-in-law, niece, and nephew, who joined us primarily for the sheer fun and excitement of it all. It turned out to be the perfect blend of professional development and unexpected family magic.

The Enriching Experience of Food Blog Forum
For any aspiring or established food blogger, the Food Blog Forum conference is an absolute must-attend at some point in your blogging journey. It stands out as an exceptional gathering where a community of passionate individuals converges, eager to share insights, collaborate, and learn from one another. The conference is meticulously organized by a stellar lineup of hosts, including Jaden and Scott (The Steamy Kitchen), Todd and Diane (White on Rice), Lindsay (Love and Olive Oil), and Julie (The Little Kitchen). They consistently curate an amazing schedule of insightful talks, engaging local activities, and interactive sessions led by prominent food bloggers and supported by fantastic sponsors.
I left the conference feeling incredibly inspired and enlightened, having learned a tremendous amount about various aspects of food blogging. It was particularly thrilling to finally meet in person so many talented bloggers whom I had only followed online. Connecting with creative minds like Lindsay, Julianne, Kelly, Ashley, Aly, Joanne, Audrey, and Emily, to name just a few, was an invaluable experience. Here are some of the standout highlights from the conference for me:
- **’Deliciously Disney’ Lunch at The Contemporary Resort:** A truly fabulous culinary experience, generously sponsored by Disney. This exclusive event offered a taste of Disney’s renowned hospitality and innovative cuisine in an elegant setting, giving us a glimpse into the resort’s culinary excellence.
- **A Taste of Orlando Field Trip to the East End Market:** This immersive field trip, sponsored by Visit Orlando, took us to a vibrant neighborhood market and culinary food hub. It was fascinating to see a place so deeply inspired by Central Florida’s local farmers and food artisans, offering unique flavors and a strong sense of community outside the theme parks.
- **Pinterest Best Practices Session by Enid Hwang from Pinterest:** This session provided actionable strategies and cutting-edge insights directly from a Pinterest expert, offering invaluable guidance on how to optimize content for maximum reach and engagement on the platform.
- **Food Photography and Styling Session by White on Rice Couple:** Todd and Diane, masters of their craft, shared their expert techniques and creative approaches to food photography and styling, equipping attendees with practical skills to elevate their visual content.

Magic Kingdom: Where the Magic Unfolds for a First-Timer
Despite the incredibly enriching and well-organized conference, it was my full day at Magic Kingdom that truly stole the show and became the undisputed highlight of this trip. With a free day from conference activities on Sunday, I decided to join my family at the parks. If I only had one day to experience Disney, I reasoned, it had to be at Magic Kingdom – even though I harbored a deep yearning to explore Epcot for its renowned culinary delights. After all, Magic Kingdom boasts the legendary Cinderella Castle, the quintessential symbol of Disney magic!
I am profoundly grateful I chose Magic Kingdom, because the experience utterly surpassed any expectations and genuinely blew me away. From the moment I stepped onto Main Street U.S.A., a wave of nostalgia (for a childhood I didn’t even have!) and wonder washed over me. Everything felt larger than life and meticulously crafted to evoke joy. The majestic Cinderella Castle, soaring proudly against the bright blue sky, was an awe-inspiring sight that truly sets the stage for the enchantment to come. The infectious energy of the crowds, the vibrant parades with their elaborate floats and beloved characters, and the meticulously themed lands, all contributed to an atmosphere unlike any other.
Beyond the iconic castle and thrilling rides (which I mostly observed, due to being four months pregnant at the time, opting for the role of family paparazzi), meeting the characters was a surprisingly heartwarming experience. Witnessing my niece’s sheer delight as she interacted with her favorite princesses, or my nephew’s excitement upon seeing beloved heroes, was a powerful reminder of the pure, unadulterated joy Disney instills. The magic wasn’t just in the grand spectacles but in these small, personal encounters. As evening descended, the late-night fireworks display over Cinderella Castle was nothing short of breathtaking. It was a symphony of light, music, and storytelling that culminated in a truly magical and emotional crescendo, leaving me utterly spellbound.
My niece Miss M and I posing together at Magic Kingdom! (Can you tell I’m trying to subtly hide my 4-month baby bump?)
They braved the water rides and got delightfully soaked; I, on the other hand, stayed comfortably dry and embraced my role as the designated paparazzi.
Delighted to find my favorite Disney princess – Ariel!
When you’re adventuring with a 13-year-old, it’s absolutely all about capturing those perfect selfies at every turn!
The Awakening of My Inner Child and the Enduring Magic
I must confess, that weekend undeniably awakened an inner child I wasn’t sure I possessed. I’ve often been told I lacked one, but the moment those adorable Mickey ears adorned my head (seriously, they are incredibly cute!), any lingering skepticism simply vanished. It was an instant transformation. The infectious atmosphere, the vibrant colors, the joyful music, and most profoundly, witnessing the pure, unadulterated ecstasy of a four-year-old bouncing with excitement as she met Belle – it was all incredibly moving. This raw, genuine happiness in children is just incredible to observe, and when you see it unfold before your eyes, it’s truly impossible not to feel the magic yourself. This trip has undoubtedly filled me with an even greater anticipation to have children of my own and introduce them to this enchanting world.
Even Mr. J had a memorable moment meeting Elsa, proudly sporting his Olaf shirt. (Amusingly, he was ‘pooped on’ by a bird earlier and had to reluctantly change into a shirt his sister and I insisted he wear!)

An Unexpected Return: More Orlando Adventures Await!
Adding another layer of excitement to this already incredible trip, my husband and I are incredibly fortunate to be returning to Orlando sometime within the next year! During the conference, I won a fantastic Visit Orlando Culinary Trip Giveaway! This means we’ll have the wonderful opportunity to explore more of Orlando, delving deeper into its diverse culinary scene and attractions well beyond the theme parks. I seriously cannot wait for that adventure and to discover all the hidden gems and local flavors this vibrant city has to offer.

My first journey to Walt Disney World as a self-proclaimed non-believer was nothing short of a revelation. It proved that magic isn’t just for children or for those who grew up immersed in fairytales. It’s a universal feeling that can awaken joy and wonder in anyone, at any age. This experience has truly changed my perspective, and I’m already looking forward to future visits and creating new cherished memories.
