The Secret to Effortless Holiday Baking: Homemade Cinnamon Rolls Made Easy

Many home cooks shy away from making cinnamon rolls from scratch, often burdened by the misconception that they are overly time-consuming or complex. I’m delighted to debunk that myth! While the recipe might appear “long” at first glance, it’s actually one of the most straightforward and forgiving baking projects you can undertake, especially with the help of a stand mixer. The beauty of these Eggnog Cinnamon Rolls lies in their leisurely pace, making them ideal for those magical mornings when time seems to slow down – like Christmas morning. You’re not rushing; you’re savoring the process, letting the dough do most of the work while you enjoy precious family time.

Let me guide you through the simple steps, and you’ll quickly discover just how approachable and enjoyable baking these rolls can be. The journey begins with a basic yeast dough, which comes together in your stand mixer in ten minutes or less. The dough hook attachment is your best friend here, effortlessly kneading the ingredients into a smooth, pliable ball, saving your hands from sticky work and your arms from fatigue. It’s a quick initial investment of effort that yields incredible results.

Crafting the Perfect Dough: A Foundation of Flavor

Mixing Eggnog Cinnamon Roll Dough in a Stand Mixer

The magic starts by activating your yeast with a touch of warm water and granulated sugar. Watch as it gently blooms, forming a frothy cap that assures you of its readiness to bring life to your dough. Into this bubbly mixture, we introduce the key players for our unique flavor: warm eggnog, rich melted butter, a dollop of plain yogurt for tenderness, and a large egg. These ingredients transform a standard cinnamon roll dough into something truly special, infusing it with that distinctive holiday warmth. Finally, flour, a pinch of kosher salt, and vanilla extract are added, and your stand mixer takes over, kneading the dough until it’s wonderfully smooth and elastic. This entire process takes mere minutes, allowing you to move on to the next exciting part of your holiday morning.

The First Rise: Hands-Off Holiday Prep

Once your dough is perfectly kneaded, transfer it to a lightly oiled bowl, cover it loosely with plastic wrap, and tuck it away in a warm, draft-free spot. Now, the dough works its magic, quietly rising for about an hour until it has gloriously doubled in size. This is your cue to relax! I often start this step the moment I wake up on Christmas morning. While the dough slowly proofs, I can leisurely enjoy my first cup of coffee, watch the children excitedly unwrap gifts, and soak in the festive atmosphere. It’s truly a hands-off period, allowing you to be present for those precious family moments without feeling tied to the kitchen. Once it’s had its restful rise, it’s time to gently punch down the dough, releasing the air and preparing it for its transformation into beautiful rolls.

Creating the Irresistible Filling: A Symphony of Spice and Citrus

With your dough ready to go, it’s time to create the heart of these eggnog cinnamon rolls: the filling. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into a large, even rectangle. The goal is to achieve a consistent thickness that will result in beautifully layered rolls. Next, generously spread a layer of incredibly soft, almost melted unsalted butter over the entire surface of the dough. This butter not only adds richness but acts as the perfect adhesive for our flavorful dry ingredients.

Over the butter, sprinkle a generous mixture of light brown sugar and ground cinnamon. This classic combination creates that warm, inviting spice profile we all love in a cinnamon roll. But we’re not stopping there. To truly elevate these holiday rolls, add a vibrant layer of fresh orange zest. This bright, aromatic addition cuts through the richness, providing a delightful citrusy pop that harmonizes beautifully with the eggnog and cinnamon. It’s a simple extra step that makes all the difference, adding another layer of festive flavor.

Shaping and the Final Rise: Anticipation Builds

Now comes the satisfying part: tightly rolling up your dough. Starting from one of the longer edges, carefully roll the rectangle into a snug log. A tight roll is key to achieving those beautiful, distinct swirls in your finished cinnamon rolls. Once rolled, transfer the log to a cutting board. For perfectly uniform slices, I recommend using a piece of unflavored dental floss or kitchen twine. Simply slide it under the log, cross the ends over the top, and pull taught to cut through the dough cleanly. This method ensures each roll is perfectly round and evenly sized. Arrange your freshly cut rolls snugly in a prepared 9-inch round baking dish or pie dish.

Cover the pan and let the rolls rest for another 30 minutes for their final rise. This crucial step allows them to puff up beautifully, ensuring an incredibly soft and tender texture. While they rise, preheat your oven. Just before baking, give them one more loving touch: brush the tops with a little more melted butter. This helps them achieve a gorgeous golden-brown crust and a wonderfully rich flavor.

Bake them until they are gloriously golden brown and fragrant, typically around 25 minutes. The smell that will waft from your kitchen during this time is pure holiday bliss – a mix of sweet cinnamon, rich eggnog, and bright orange that will draw everyone to the kitchen.

The Grand Finale: Luscious Eggnog Cream Cheese Frosting

And what are cinnamon rolls without their crowning glory? As your rolls emerge from the oven, still warm and inviting, it’s time to prepare the finishing touch: a decadent eggnog cream cheese frosting. This frosting is incredibly simple to make, yet it elevates the entire experience. Cream cheese, melted butter, confectioners’ sugar, and, of course, a splash of eggnog and vanilla extract are whisked together until smooth, creamy, and light. The eggnog in the frosting echoes the flavors in the rolls, tying everything together beautifully. Slather this luscious frosting generously over the warm buns, allowing it to melt slightly into all the nooks and crannies. The contrast of the warm, soft roll with the cool, sweet frosting is simply heavenly.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 package)
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and browned
  • 1 cup warm eggnog
  • ¼ cup plain yogurt
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Filling:

  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature to be very soft. Or you can microwave it for 10 seconds
  • Zest of one orange

For the Frosting:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons eggnog
  • 1 ½ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of your stand mixer, combine the yeast and sugar. Add the warm water to the bowl and gently stir. Let stand until yeast blooms (bubbles and foams), about 10 minutes.
  2. Add in the melted butter, warm eggnog, yogurt and eggs to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine. Add in the flour, salt and vanilla extract. Using the dough hook of your mixer, knead the dough until it is smooth and comes into a ball, about 5 minutes.
  3. Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise in a draft-free warm area, about 1 hour or until dough doubles in size.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the filling by combining the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Make sure the ½ cup butter is softened and is spreadable with a spatula. Generously grease a 9-inch round baking dish or pie dish with some of the butter.
  5. Once the dough is ready, transfer to a lightly floured surface and roll dough into a rectangle. Spread about 6 tablespoons of softened butter over the rolled dough. Generously sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the butter. Lightly press down the sugar into the butter and dough. Sprinkle the orange zest over the sugar.
  6. Starting with the longest edge towards you, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the edges together at the end. Transfer the dough to a cutting board. Cut the dough into 1-inch thick rolls using either a serrated knife or dental floss or baking twine.
  7. Transfer the rolls to the prepared pan. Cover the pan with a kitchen towel and let rolls rise, doubling in size, for about 30 minutes.
  8. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 C).
  9. When rolls are ready, brush the tops with the remaining 2 tablespoons softened butter.
  10. Bake rolls until golden brown, about 25 minutes.
  11. Meanwhile, make the frosting. In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, melted butter and whisk until creamy and light. Add in the powdered sugar and mix well. Then add in eggnog and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth and combined.
  12. Spread the frosting over the warm rolls. Enjoy.
