The Irresistible Fusion of Flavors

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bread

Do you remember the first time you experienced the magical combination of chocolate and peanut butter? For many, it’s a culinary revelation, a flavor pairing that truly elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary. Incorporating these two powerhouses into a classic banana bread recipe transforms it into something truly special – a rich, satisfying bake that can be enjoyed any time of day, from a delightful breakfast to an indulgent late-night snack.

Traditional banana bread is cherished for its dense, moist texture, achieved through a blend of ripe bananas, sugar, and vanilla. It’s a simple pleasure, often best enjoyed with just a dollop of melted butter. But this recipe takes that timeless favorite to a whole new level. The addition of creamy peanut butter introduces an unparalleled depth of flavor and an even greater level of moisture, resulting in a loaf that is incredibly tender and flavorful. While I prefer creamy peanut butter for its smooth texture, don’t hesitate to use chunky peanut butter if you desire an added crunch to your bread.

Crafting Your Perfect Loaf: Tips and Tricks

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bread

Achieving the perfect Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bread is easier than you might think, especially with a few key considerations:

  • Banana Selection: The riper the bananas, the better! Look for bananas with plenty of brown spots or even entirely brown peels. These are sweeter and mash more easily, contributing significantly to the bread’s moistness and flavor.
  • Chocolate Choices: As a dedicated chocolate lover, I always recommend loading up on chocolate chips! You can adjust the quantity based on your preference. Semi-sweet chips are a classic choice, but dark chocolate will add a richer, less sweet contrast, while milk chocolate will lean into a sweeter profile. Feel free to use chocolate chunks for larger pockets of melted goodness.
  • Peanut Butter Power: Creamy peanut butter blends seamlessly into the batter, ensuring uniform moisture and flavor. If you’re a fan of texture, chunky peanut butter adds delightful nutty bites throughout the bread. Just ensure you use a good quality, stir-well peanut butter for the best results.
  • Avoid Overmixing: For a tender banana bread, mix the wet and dry ingredients only until just combined. Overmixing can develop the gluten in the flour, leading to a tougher loaf.
  • The Peanut Butter Crumble: The topping is optional but highly recommended! It adds a beautiful textural contrast and an extra layer of peanut butter flavor that makes this bread truly stand out.

Even with its naturally sweet ingredients, I often serve this Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bread to my kids for breakfast. A quick reheat in the microwave for a few seconds allows any butter you spread to melt into every delightful crevice. This bread is always a welcome sight, regardless of the occasion. In fact, you might want to consider making an extra loaf just for yourself – because leftovers are a rarity when this delicious bread is around!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bread

The classic combination of chocolate and peanut butter in a loaf of banana bread!

Prep Time

Cook Time

Total Time
1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

Peanut Butter Crumble

  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter

Batter

  • 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 medium bananas, mashed
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup peanut butter chips

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 C).
  2. In a small bowl, cream together all the peanut butter crumble ingredients until well combined; set aside.
  3. In another medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, which usually takes about 3 minutes on medium speed.
  5. Add the beaten egg gradually, in 2-3 increments, ensuring each addition is fully incorporated before adding the next. Continue to beat the mixture until it becomes light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl to ensure everything is thoroughly mixed.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract and mashed bananas. Beat until just combined. Slowly add the buttermilk in 3 additions, mixing gently after each.
  7. Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients in 2 increments, mixing only until just combined and no streaks of flour remain. Do not overmix.
  8. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in the peanut butter chips.
  9. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle the prepared peanut butter crumble over the top of the batter, tapping down lightly to adhere.
  10. Bake the bread for 55-65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs attached, but no wet batter.
  11. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes before carefully turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Serve warm for the best experience!

Notes

  1. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, refrigerate for up to 7 days, or freeze for up to 3 months in a freezer-safe container.
  2. If using unsalted butter in the main batter, add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the batter. The crumble recipe does not require any additional salt.
  3. To make your own buttermilk, combine 1/2 cup of milk (avoid skim milk) with 3/4 teaspoon of lemon juice or white vinegar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it slightly curdles.
  4. You can substitute other types of chips (e.g., chocolate chips, white chocolate chips) or nuts (e.g., walnuts, pecans) for the peanut butter chips if desired.
  5. Chunky peanut butter can be used instead of creamy for a delightful extra crunch in the bread.
  6. For allergy concerns: The peanut butter can be omitted from the batter. If omitting peanut butter chips, substitute with your favorite chocolate chips/chunks or leave them out altogether. If omitting peanut butter from the crumble, increase the unsalted butter in the crumble to 2 tablespoons instead of 1 tablespoon, and consider adding a tablespoon of flour to maintain texture.
