There’s an undeniable charm to weekend getaways, especially when they involve exploring new cities. For my husband and me, these short escapes have become a cherished tradition. Living in Syracuse affords us the wonderful advantage of being within a few hours’ drive of several major metropolitan hubs. Destinations like Boston, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Montreal, and, of course, Toronto are all conveniently accessible within a 5-6 hour drive. Last September, we seized the opportunity for a spontaneous weekend trip to Toronto, a city we hadn’t yet had the pleasure of discovering. From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by its dynamic energy, diverse neighborhoods, and, most importantly, its incredible food scene. Every sight we absorbed and every bite we savored left a lasting impression, cementing Toronto as a destination we eagerly anticipate revisiting.
As a passionate foodie blogger, the thrill of exploring new cities is only enhanced when I can tap into local expertise. Fortunately, I have some amazing friends who are culinary connoisseurs in their respective cities. For our Toronto adventure, my fantastic gal pals Jenny from The Brunette Baker and Kelly from Life Made Sweeter generously shared a wealth of recommendations for their local favorite spots. Their insider tips proved invaluable, guiding us to some truly exceptional establishments. A huge thank you to Kelly and Jenny for making our Toronto sweet pilgrimage so incredibly rewarding!
Today, I am absolutely thrilled to share with you a curated list of some of the best sweets and desserts we discovered in Toronto. While I plan to delve into other culinary delights and exciting activities in a future post, it’s no secret that satisfying my sweet cravings was a top priority on this trip. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the irresistible world of Toronto’s desserts!
Toronto’s Patisserie Paradise: Cakes, Cupcakes & Artisan Delights
When it comes to refined pastries, delectable cakes, and charming cupcakes, Toronto’s patisserie scene is second to none. Our journey into this sugary realm began with two establishments that consistently topped every recommendation list for artisan eclairs, delicate macarons, and exquisite pastries: Nugateau and Nadege Patisserie. And let me tell you, they did not just meet expectations; they soared past them.
Stepping into Nugateau felt like entering an art gallery, but instead of paintings, the masterpieces were edible. Their eclairs are arguably the prettiest I have ever encountered, each a miniature work of art adorned with intricate designs and vibrant glazes. The sheer visual appeal is astounding, but it’s the flavor combinations that truly elevate the experience. Each eclair is a harmonious blend of textures and tastes, a testament to their culinary artistry. Choosing from their dazzling array was a delightful challenge, but the pistachio and raspberry eclairs ultimately won our hearts. The pistachio offered a rich, nuanced nuttiness, while the raspberry provided a burst of refreshing, tart fruitiness. Both were utterly incredible, showcasing a perfect balance that made every bite a moment to savor. Nugateau is, without a doubt, a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a truly elevated pastry experience.

On the other hand, Nadege Patisserie is an absolute dream come true for macaron enthusiasts. Their display case is a kaleidoscope of colors, housing an extensive selection of these delicate French confections. Each macaron is a perfect little pillow of delight – crisp on the outside, delightfully chewy within, and bursting with rich, authentic flavor. From classic vanilla and chocolate to more adventurous floral and fruity notes, Nadege offers a flavor for every palate. The quality and variety were so overwhelming that I found myself happily lost in a sea of macarons, admittedly neglecting to sample their equally impressive selection of tarts and other pastries. Don’t make my delicious mistake; make sure to explore all the exquisite offerings Nadege has!

Beyond these two phenomenal patisseries, Toronto boasts several other bakeries that left an indelible mark on our sweet adventure. We also highly recommend exploring the offerings at Dufflet Pastries, Uncle Tetsu, andMillie’s Patisserie. Each of these establishments brings something unique and utterly delicious to the table.
At Dufflet, the recommendation is simple: get a slice of any cake that catches your eye, because they are all universally incredible. Known for their classic, rich, and impeccably layered cakes, Dufflet has been a Toronto institution for decades, perfecting the art of celebratory desserts. Their dedication to quality ingredients and timeless recipes shines through in every forkful.

A visit to Uncle Tetsu’s is non-negotiable for anyone craving something uniquely delightful. Their Japanese cheesecake is legendary for a reason. Incredibly light, wonderfully fluffy, and with a delicate wobble, it’s a stark contrast to traditional Western cheesecakes and an absolute revelation. It’s so good, you might find yourself going back for a second one!

And for something truly elegant, make sure to grab a slice of crepe cake from Millie’s Patisserie. These exquisite creations feature dozens of ultra-thin crepes layered with delicate cream, offering a wonderfully light texture and subtle, sophisticated flavors. It’s a visually stunning and incredibly satisfying dessert that speaks to precise craftsmanship.

Finally, no exploration of Toronto’s sweets would be complete without a stop at any of the Soma Chocolatemaker locations. While they offer an array of bean-to-bar chocolates and confections, their hot chocolate is simply divine—it’s truly to die for. We visited their charming outpost in the historic Distillery District, where we savored a warm, rich cup of hot chocolate, perfectly complementing our leisurely exploration of the cobblestone streets and artisan shops. It’s the ultimate comfort drink, crafted with passion and expertise.

Donut Dreams: Craft Doughnuts in Toronto
Now, let’s talk about doughnuts. Are they merely a breakfast item, or can they transcend into the realm of true dessert? In my culinary lexicon, artisan doughnuts confidently claim a spot in both categories. These aren’t your average quick grab-and-go treats; these are creations crafted with imagination, quality ingredients, and a flair for flavor that elevates them to sweet indulgences. During our Toronto visit, two incredible doughnut shops stood out: Glory Hole Doughnuts and Sunshine Doughnuts. Unfortunately, due to some miscalculations with opening hours, we missed out on a few other highly recommended spots, but these two certainly made up for it.
Glory Hole Doughnuts lives up to its playful name by delivering genuinely glorious, hand-crafted doughnuts. Their selection boasts innovative flavors and perfectly airy, yet substantial, dough. Each doughnut is a testament to their dedication to quality, offering a delightful chewiness and a burst of flavor that is both comforting and exciting. From classic glazes to adventurous toppings, their offerings are a feast for the eyes and the palate. Sunshine Doughnuts, though slightly outside the immediate city center in Burlington, is absolutely worth the short trip. Their doughnuts are similarly exceptional, featuring a rotating menu of creative and seasonal flavors that promise a fresh experience with every visit. We sampled a variety, each one a testament to the artistry of modern doughnut making.

While we couldn’t make it to every highly-touted doughnut spot, others that come with enthusiastic recommendations include Jelly Modern Doughnuts, known for their gourmet approach to classic flavors, andVon Doughnuts, which are celebrated for their unconventional and bold flavor pairings. A pro tip for any doughnut connoisseur visiting Toronto: always check their store hours beforehand to plan your sweet pilgrimage accordingly and avoid missing out on these exceptional treats!
Chill Out with Toronto’s Best Ice Cream Shops
And now, for the grand finale of our sweet adventure: ice cream! I must confess, the quality and innovation of Toronto’s ice cream scene were perhaps the biggest and most delightful surprise of our entire trip. The city truly knows how to do ice cream, offering an exciting array of artisan shops, unique flavors, and inventive presentations that delighted my inner child and adult foodie alike.

Our first stop was the famously extravagant Sweet Jesus. Let’s just say their names for cones are as audacious as their creations! This place is a wonderland of over-the-top soft serve, designed not just for taste but also for maximum Instagram appeal. I opted for the “Krusty the Cone,” a whimsical masterpiece featuring vanilla soft serve, a cloud of fluffy cotton candy, cotton candy sauce, and a generous sprinkle of rainbow goodness. My husband chose the equally impressive “Birthday Cake,” which combined vanilla soft serve with decadent cream cheese icing, delightful birthday cake bits, and more rainbow sprinkles. Each creation was an explosion of flavor and texture, a truly unique and joyful ice cream experience.

Next on our list was iHalo Krunch, an innovative ice cream shop that captivated us with its distinctive charcoal cones. Beyond the striking aesthetic, iHalo Krunch offers a fascinating array of unique and often Asian-inspired flavors, like the increasingly popular Ube (purple yam). The combination of a visually stunning black cone and intriguing flavor profiles makes for a truly memorable ice cream experience that stands out in the crowded dessert market.

Finally, we landed at Booyah, a place that promised (and delivered!) two magical words: ICE CREAM TACOS. Yes, you read that right. Booyah allows you to unleash your creativity by building your own ice cream tacos, using either crispy waffle cones or delicious cookies as your shell. The possibilities felt nearly endless! After much deliberation, I believe I settled on a ginger cookie shell, perfectly complementing a scoop of earthy matcha ice cream and another scoop of rich, burnt butterscotch. It was a playful, delicious, and utterly satisfying way to cap off our ice cream explorations.

Another highly raved about spot for ice cream, Bang Bang Ice Cream, unfortunately wasn’t open during our specific visit. However, it remains high on our list for our next trip, promising a fusion of creative ice cream flavors and delectable ice cream sandwiches that are legendary among locals.
